Job Description

Primary Purpose of the Job:
  • As one of Arconic’s principal metallurgists in the field of high performance aluminum alloys, the primary purpose of this position is to (a) identify, demonstrate and implement cost reduction opportunities in the manufacture of aerospace wrought products and (b) develop differentiated aerospace wrought products for low cost metallic structures.
 
Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Leads multi-disciplinary teams at the Arconic Technology Center and at manufacturing locations to develop solutions for process improvement initiatives through the following: (1) Provide root cause analysis for material quality issues and assist plant engineers in developing and implementing solutions. (2) Provide metallurgical expertise for plant process cost reduction efforts and ensure that process changes do not adversely impact material performance.  (3) Identify material performance improvement opportunities to increase recovery or to provide a differentiated product. This role would require frequent travel to plant locations.
  • This position is also responsible for: (1) Serving as project manager for new alloy/product development projects.  (2) Setting product development strategy and direction in close collaboration with customers, marketing, and plant technical resources. (3) Proposing, planning, and providing technical leadership for new alloy development projects. (4) Designing new aluminum alloy chemical compositions and processes for aerospace and other applications. (5) Promoting Arconic’s new products through conference presentations and through interaction with aerospace OEMs and subcontractors.
  • Provides leadership by (1) Identifying opportunities to create, capture and harvest intellectual property (IP) for Arconic and (2) Monitoring and assessing competitor IP and provide recommendation for any follow-up.
  • Identifying new and emerging technologies external to Arconic and initiate actions to capture these technologies.
 
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of physical and mechanical metallurgy principles of heat-treatable aluminum alloys processed as sheet, plate, extrusion or forgings, over a wide range of alloy systems.
  • Microstructure/process/property relationships of wrought, heat-treatable aluminum alloys
  • Mechanical properties of wrought aluminum alloys including fatigue and fracture.
  • Experience with composition & processing effects on corrosion performance of wrought aluminum products
  • Knowledge of aircraft metallic structural design drivers and corresponding material performance requirements
  • Thermomechanical processing of wrought, heat treatable and non-heat treatable aluminum alloys.
  • Ability to design R&D experiments, analyze data and identify physically significant trends and make recommendations for changes to composition and processing.
  • Technical leadership and collaboration skills. R&D project management skills. Demonstrated technical writing and presentation skills.
  • Track record in delivering innovative solutions with significant value.


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Master of Science in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 10 years of applied R&D experience in the aluminum alloy industry
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
     
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science from an accredited institution
  • 10 years of applied R&D experience in the aluminum alloy industry
