Job Description

The Surface Quality Leader is the Location expert in Surface Quality Monitoring and will be responsible for combining a fundamental understanding of customer requirements with expertise of the Surface Quality Monitoring (SQM) systems to deliver optimum quality cost solutions. The Surface Quality Leader leads the Location in selection, operation and maintenance of SQM systems, including surface appearance measurement technology, roll surface inspection technology, Visual Process Boards and feedforward technology for downstream PC’s and customers. The Surface Quality Leader supervises one or more hourly Surface Quality Technicians to develop accurate classification systems and effective reaction plans, develop and deliver user training, audit system performance, calibrate and repair SQM equipment and designate preventative maintenance requirements.


  • Supervise one or more hourly Surface Quality Technicians;
  • Act as the primary contact with Corporate MET / CoE Surface Quality resources;
  • Lead the Location in maintaining Certification to the Corporate Standard Practice for Surface Monitoring;
  • Evaluate the adequacy of existing SQM systems and provide recommendations for replacement or upgrade;
  • Develop written operating procedures documenting routine SQM monitoring requirements, reaction plans and stop criteria;
  • Act as a Project Leader for Contracted Services per the EHS Contracted Services Safety Policy;
  • Develop RFA Proposals and partner with Engineering and Production to commission new SQM systems and upgrades.
  • Build surface characterization libraries;
  • Verifies, modifies and enhances classification to enable full automation;
  • Work with operating personnel to define reaction plans and incorporating SQM information into daily management and problem solving;
  • Work with Engineering and Maintenance to implement SQM associated error proofing, e.g. Alarms, Auto holds, Mill Permissives, “No Next Pass” logic;
  • Perform in-house calibrations and alignments of cameras, lights and related SQM equipment;
  • Repair SQM equipment and arrange for vendor / CoE support as needed to effect repairs;
  • Generate requisitions as required for outside services;
  • Support Production Departments in improving visual (non-SQM) inspection methodologies
  • Establish performance goals and conduct performance evaluations of direct reports;
  • Train staff, operating and maintenance personnel on use of the SQM, interpretation of results, and equipment maintenance;
  • Provide support to staff, operating and maintenance personnel on use of the SQM, interpretation of results, and equipment maintenance;
  • Define and implement backup strategy for SQM support;
  • Assist in multi-disciplined problem solving on system and quality issues.
  • Conducts and documents daily, weekly and monthly system health checks;
  • Audit SQM processes to ensure classification is accurate and reaction plans are correctly followed;
  • Support system reliability by maintaining an adequate spare part inventory;
  • Work with Maintenance personnel to establish PM schedules and monitor to ensure PM compliance;
  • Establish and follow data storage procedures to ensure all corporate and customer requirements are met;
  • Maintains records of SQM System changes and complies with Location Change Management procedures.
Other Necessary Functions:

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent;
  • Five years of manufacturing experience in one or more of the following areas: Cold Mill, Mill Finishing, Paint Line, MQS

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems / Technology, Electrical Technology, Electro-Mechanical Technology, Chemistry, or Physics;
  • Supervisory experience;
  • Experience in multiple manufacturing areas;
  • Experience with computer networking, computer hardware, software and related troubleshooting;
  • Experience in a quality related function such as Quality Star Point, Quality Engineer / Coordinator, Process Engineer / Coordinator, Quality Systems, Metallurgy, Laboratories;
  • Strong mechanical and process aptitude;
  • Strong decision making and problem-solving skills;
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point).
