Job Description

Primary Purpose of the Job:
  • The Staff Technician position within the Spectrochemical Reference Materials business is responsible for the preparation and analysis of metal alloys by ICP-AES (Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy), ICP-OES (Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry), ICP-MS (Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry), and/or Spark-AES (atomic emissions spectrometry) as part of the Spectrochemical Reference Materials certification process.  This position works together with the Spectrochemical Reference Materials' ICP and Analytical Coordinators to ensure incoming work is completed in a timely fashion to meet Spectrochemical Reference Materials' customer needs. This position supports Spectrochemical Refence Materials sales and overall growth model.  This position is required to ensure all testing is done within the guidelines of a Quality System.
 
Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Demonstrates ability to characterize materials for a variety of sample matrices using ICP-AES, ICP-MS and Spark-AES; specifically, aluminum, titanium, and nickel alloys
  • Independently performs routine/defined preparation and analysis of samples in a timely manner using standard Good Laboratory Practices
  • Ensures all work is done within the guidelines of the Quality System for ISO 9001, 17025, and 17034 accreditations
  • Runs and evaluates appropriate QA/QC samples as part of the overall Quality SPC process; including Control Charting
  • Collaborates with Spectrochemical Reference Materials Sales, ICP Coordinator, and Analytical Coordinator to ensure incoming work is completed in a timely fashion to meet customer needs
  • Effectively and promptly works and communicates with the Spectrochemical Reference Materials' team and other analysts concerning assigned samples and projects in person, by phone and email, when necessary
  • Organizes work to use time effectively; identifies scheduling roadblocks and resolves
  • Performs advanced data interpretation utilizing instrumentation software, Excel, and statistical tools
  • Evaluates and reports analysis results to Spectrochemical Reference Materials' Analytical Coordinator, ICP Coordinator and/or Technical Manager
  • Acquires business knowledge such as Arconic BU products and processes; recognizes the impact of preparation and analysis quality and timeliness on subsequent sample analyses
  • Actively completes broad range of learning opportunities within principal area for growth and development; participates in cross-training activities for growth and development; acquires knowledge from supervisor and coworkers to enable assumption of responsibility for lab area
  • Identifies and communicates potential problems; presents ideas for problem resolution; resolves with guidance from supervisor and more experienced analysts
  • Exhibit strong problem-solving skills.  Demonstrated trouble-shooting skills with analytical instrumentation
  • Gathers information to understand risk associated with methods; initiates appropriate action in spite of uncertainty; learns from error and failure; communicates with supervisor and coworkers to define actions necessary to prevent future failure
  • Write and/or update quality documentation related to analysis techniques including but not limited to SOPs, SWI, PEHSRs, etc.
  • Supports Spectrochemical Reference Materials EHS policies and programs
 
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • BS Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental, Engineering or equivalent
  • High level of adaptability in a rapidly changing work environment
  • Advanced analytical skills. Able to perform independent analyses and technique specific sample preparation
  • In-depth knowledge of analytical techniques and their limitations, specifically ICP-AES, ICP-MS, ICP-OES, and Spark-AES for the compositional analysis of metals
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Physical ability to perform demanding sample preparation activities

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 6 months' experience with ICP-AES, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, and/or Spark-AES.
  • Minimum 1 year laboratory work experience.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status.  ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Engineering, or equivalent
  • 3+ years’ experience with ICP-AES, ICP-MS, or Spark-AES.
  • Strong knowledge of chemistry, analytical chemistry, and/or environmental science
  • Strong computer skills with standard Microsoft software
  • Good laboratory practice, advanced laboratory skills
  • Experience analyzing metal alloys (aluminum, titanium, nickel)
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with a high degree of accuracy in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven ability to process complex data sets using Excel and basic statistical tools
  • Familiarity with Quality Systems and ASTM test methods
