Job Description

The Staff Technician, Coil Line Operator reports administratively to the Manager, Process Engineering & TCS in the Materials Interfaces & Surface Engineering Division. Under supervision from engineering personnel, the primary responsibility of this role is to support the day to day operations of coil coating pilot line including all trials and activities associated with preparation of chemicals, materials and supplies.

Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Preparation, transfer and safe handling of chemicals, including acids and bases
  • Titration and analysis of chemicals to support daily operations
  • Safe handling of metal coils and samples
  • Operation of complex mechanical equipment
  • Develop and document Standard Operating Procedures
  • Versatility to assume other surface and coating tasks in other areas of the Materials Interfaces and Surface Engineering Division when required, e.g., batch surface treatment, surface tension measurements, bench top draw down coating application and others.
  • The position will require verbal and written reporting to project leaders
  • Travel to Arconic and customer plants, on an as needed basis, for implementation and troubleshooting of related processes
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • Working knowledge of chemical hygiene practices, lab testing and organization of data.
  • Mechanical and equipment aptitude including the ability to troubleshoot and enlist support of maintenance personnel.
  • Problem solving skills and ability to think outside the box.
  • Working knowledge of data collection techniques and statistical process control
  • Working knowledge of basic computer applications for data presentation (Word, Excel and Power Point)
  • Broad understanding of the impact of surface treatments and coatings on downstream processes and performance.
  • Experience in scaling up processes from laboratory to production.


Basic Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 5 years work experience with chemicals and process equipment operation
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.


Preferred Qualifications

  • AS in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemistry
  • Minimum 5 years experience in process engineering and R&D
