Job Description

  • Newly created position in the Material Interfaces & Surfaces Engineering Division. This position will perform surface chemical analysis in support of BU customers with limited supervision to create value in Arconic’s processes and products.
  • This position brings advanced surface characterization knowledge to support current and future projects, products and processes. Primary responsibility will include the development of complex surface analytical methods and analyses through the use of surface sensitive equipment (Auger and XPS) for advanced materials including powders, ceramics, metals, and metal oxides.
Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Lead the development of novel surface analytical techniques for characterizing advanced materials
  • Lead complex data analysis including multivariate, imaging, spectral characterization and peak fitting
  • Provide direct support to BU and internal customers for new product and process development
  • Fosters collaborative relationships with internal and external resources in support of projects
  • Develops project proposals aligned with business needs and technology road maps
  • Leads technical projects and is accountable for project management from idea creation to implementation
  • Solves surface problems, seeks and identifies opportunities, and looks to implement innovative surface solutions with limited direct supervision
  • Is accountable for maintaining operation of surface analysis equipment
  • Identifies and benchmarks technologies with potential value to Arconic’s processes and products
  • Provides functional guidance to technicians
  • Communicates progress/results through written detailed technical reports as well as oral presentations to management and peers
  • Identifies opportunities for new intellectual property
  • Generates creative ideas and solves issues using scientific concepts, seeks and identifies opportunities and implements innovative solutions with limited direct functional supervision
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • Recognized as an expert in the field of surface analysis and characterization, surface chemistry, and/or surface physics
  • Strong analytical and data processing skills including experience with multivariate and spectral characterization
  • Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting surface analysis equipment including one or more of the following: Auger, XPS, SIMS, UHV systems
  • Ability to design R&D experiments, analyze data and identify important variables and physically significant trends
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership and organization skills as well as the ability to influence
  • Ability to network and collaborate across a broad spectrum of internal and external customers
  • Technical writing and presentation skills
  • Advanced computing skills

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science/Engineering or Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 3 years of work experience in surface analysis
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.


Preferred Qualifications
