Primary Purpose of the Job:
  • This position is a member of the aerospace product development team at the Arconic Technology Center (ATC).
  • Initiate, plan, and execute aluminum product development and/or process improvement projects to deliver growth opportunities and cost reduction for Arconic's aerospace aluminum sheet, plate, and extrusion products.
  • Lead and guide others in lab-scale studies and plant-scale trials to succesful completion by collaborating effectively with various teams across the ATC and plant locations.
  • Apply metallurgical expertise in 2xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx & 7xxx aluminum alloys targeted for structural applications primarily  in aerospace and also automotive markets.
     
Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Serve as key contributor for new alloy/product development projects.
  • Initiate and lead lab-scale trials that are focused on developing new options for alloy processing, microstructure, and property improvements.
  • Identify and develop creative solutions to alloy and processing challenges.
  • Propose, plan, and execute new alloy/product development projects for plant-scale implementation.
  • Act as the ATC metallurgical lead on multi-disciplinary projects between ATC and plant locations to develop solutions for process improvement initiatives.
  • Provide metallurgical expertise for plant process cost reduction efforts and ensure that process changes do not adversely impact material performance.
  • Provide root cause analysis for material quality issues and assist plant engineers in developing and implementing solutions.
  • Ensure completion and documentation of projects through formal reports and presentations.
  • Proactively manage project priorities and balance resources.
  • Travel to plant locations to support product trials and process implementation activities.
  • Represent Arconic at external customers and participating in conference and standards organizations.
  • Engage with aerospace customers to establish product performance requirements.
  • Identify and capture intellectual property for product and process innovations.
     
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • Experience in metallurgy and materials science of aluminum alloys through both fundamental and applied research.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate composition and processing effects on microstructure and properties.
  • Strong technical leadership and collaboration skills.
  • Proficiency in the efficient design of R&D experiments to acquire desired outputs and data analysis to determine impact of variables and predict trends.
  • Demonstrated technical writing and presentation skills.
  • Proven record in R&D project management skills.


Qualifications

  Basic Qualifications:
  • PhD in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science
  • PhD dissertation on metallic alloys
  • 3+ years of applied R&D experience with physical and/or mechanical metallurgy
     
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD dissertation relating to physical and/or mechanical metallurgy of aluminum alloys
  • Applied R&D experience in the physical and/or mechanical metallurgy of aluminum alloys
