Job Description

This position provides leadership and support in ingot casting R&D for Arconic. The incumbent will work closely with other Arconic Technology Center and plant casting specialists to provide direction and hands-on support for casting experiments. The incumbent will develop safe technology and practices involving casting and molten metal processing, and drive their implementation in Arconic casting facilities. The incumbent is responsible for continual identification, pursuit, development and deployment of next generation casting technologies. The incumbent will direct and lead casting technicians and technologists in the safe execution, completion, data analysis and documentation of experiments and trials. The incumbent will be responsible for completing projects on time and within budget, and insuring that all contracted deliverables are met or exceeded. The incumbent will solve casting problems at the source and systematically implement solutions to capture value. The incumbent will communicate technical and business objectives and results to other technical and management personnel in the plants, throughout ATC, and as needed within the aluminum industry, to obtain alignment on and approval for plans to achieve goals. The total value of this position is $2-20 MM per year in cost savings and increased production. The total budgetary responsibility of this position is $1-3 MM per year.

Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Generate and capture Intellectual Property for Arconic by working with other scientists to develop next generation casting equipment and processes
  • Identify and lead bench-, pilot-, and production scale experiments related to casting and solidification of non-ferrous metals, from development through execution and analysis of results
  • Provide remote and onsite technical support for Arconic ingot plant operations world-wide
  • Ensure world-class casting facilities are maintained, by identifying solutions to problems and opportunities for improving capability, efficiency, reliability, and overall performance
  • Propose new projects with clear action plans, resource requirements, and potential business value
  • Report to various funding organizations and ATC management
  • Maintain and improve Quality System and other documentation of Casting Technology
  • Perform annual ASAT for Molten Metal safety
  • Support Arconic internal Metallurgical, Process and Safety training
  • Through connection with Aluminum Association and other industry groups, continually learn of and share improvements in molten metal safety
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • Working knowledge of materials/chemical thermodynamics and kinetics of high temperature processes.
  • Working knowledge of solidification and physical metallurgy
  • Working knowledge of fluid flow and heat transfer phenomenon
  • Understanding of casting processes
  • General understanding of process control methods
  • Understanding of molten metal manufacturing hazards and a practice of safe behavior

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical, Chemical or Mechanical engineering from an accredited institution
    Minimum 5 years industrial or laboratory experience in aluminum casting or metals manufacturing industrial processes
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.


Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Metallurgical engineering, Materials Science or related engineering field
  • One year experience in aluminum alloy DC ingot or billet casting
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
