Job Description

  • Initiating and executing aluminum product development and/or process improvement projects to deliver growth opportunities for Arconic.
  • Leading lab-scale studies and plant-scale trials to successful completion by collaborating effectively with various teams across ATC and in Business units.
  • Being recognized as a local expert in the metallurgy of heat-treatable 6xxx & 7xxx alloys and also non-heat treatable 5xxx alloys for the automotive market.
Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Identifying and developing creative solutions to alloy and processing challenges
  • Initiating and leading lab-scale studies and plant trials that are focused on developing new technical options for alloy processing, microstructure and property improvements in aluminum alloys
  • Relating composition, processes and microstructures to physical and mechanical properties.
  • Leading the development of Intellectual Property protection for new alloy products and emerging technologies
  • Interacting and collaborating with external customers.
  • Mentoring technicians and less experienced engineers
  • Identifying key alloy development areas and assess technical gaps that need to be addressed
  • Ensuring completion and documentation of projects through formal reports, invention records and patent applications.
  • Proactively managing project priorities and balance resources
  • Collaborate closely with Arconic's Business Units to ensure successful technology transfer from lab to plant-scale
  • Identifying new and emerging technologies external to Arconic and initiate actions to capture these technologies.
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • PhD in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science.
  • 3+ years experience in metallurgy and materials science of metallic alloys through fundamental or applied research
  • Strong technical leadership and collaboration skills
  • Technical writing and presentation skills as evidenced by technical reports and presentations.
  • Proven record in R&D project management skills


Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science/Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 3 years of post graduate school R&D experience
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in development of new aluminum alloy products and processes
  • Experience of DC ingot casting and/or continuous casting product and process development
  • In-depth experience in microstructure/process/property relationships of metallic materials
  • In-depth experience in mechanical property characterization of metallic materials
