Job Description

The Staff Automation Engineer will report to the Manager of Automation Systems within DMAT and is responsible for providing automation system support in the areas of selecting, defining, designing and providing strategic direction for machine and robotic controls.  This will include the design, procurement, construction, and implementation of automation systems and equipment for plant production, R&D processes, and infrastructure at the Arconic Technology Center (ATC) while adhering to and executing a well-defined scope, schedule and budget.
  
The incumbent will work closely with Project Engineers, Maintenance, Contractors, Researchers, Operators and Business unit project stakeholders to develop and deploy digital and physical automation systems in the operation of R&D processes and equipment at ATC and at process centers located across the Arconic Enterprise. The incumbent will:
  • Identify and engage qualified external partners to leverage Arconic’s technical resource capability to deploy internally developed process control technology to our manufacturing facilities.
  • Integrate Smart Manufacturing and advanced control concepts into Arconic’s industrial control system architecture.
  • Provide expert consultation to Arconic’s plants on the design and selection of control and automation systems for their processes.
  • Mentor Arconic business unit and ATC engineers to transfer technical knowledge about process control system architecture and project management skills required to lead technology transfer projects.  
  • Initiate, plan, and lead major technology transfer projects for the Engineered Products and Solutions (EP&S), Global Rolled Products (GRP), and Transportation and Construction Solutions (TCS) business units and ATC.
  • Formulate project plans for projects he/she is leading as well as employing good project management techniques to ensure that cost and schedule targets are met.
  • Collaborate with EP&S, GRP, TCS process computer systems groups, and entities outside of Arconic to keep abreast of the latest automation and industrial control products and software tools to facilitate rapid and effective system deployment within Arconic’s manufacturing organizations.
Major Activities/Key Challenges
  • Development and design of digital automation systems for existing equipment and processes including but not limited to casting, powder making, roll milling, and furnace control systems.
  • Development and design of physical automation systems that enhance the operation and throughput of Arconic’s manufacturing process centers. 
  • Work closely with Engineers, Researchers, Environmental Health and Safety, Procurement, and Project Manager/Coordinators and Business Unit stakeholders to ensure timely response to Engineering Project Requests
  • Work with Engineers in devising execution strategy of the project and engaging in the technical discussion
  • Be accountable to complete tasks by committed delivery dates
  • Document and manage changes to software, electrical drawings, and process instrumentation diagrams, scope, specification, budget and schedule through formal change management activities 
  • Participate in project team meetings and provide positive impact on project performance metrics and overall transparency of projects
  • Participate in reviews of electrical Environmental Health and Safety Reviews pertaining to digital and physical automated control systems
  • Provides innovative solutions to stakeholder’s project needs
  • Devise task specific scope of work and direct contractors to execute project deliverables
  • Develop relationships with external entities to help Arconic deploy and support industrial control and physical automation systems to meet the goals of business unit technology plans.
  • Develop electrical control schematics for process equipment
Essential Knowledge & Skills/Education
  • Demonstrated project experience with IIoT Technologies, Edge and Cloud Computing and Industry 4.0 tools such as SPLUNK
  • Demonstrated experience for developing major technology transfer projects to successful conclusions in either research or manufacturing facilities.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of current commercially available industrial automation equipment, software, and tools including temperature controllers, VFD's, PLC's, HMI's, SCADA and data acquisition systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to develop requirements analysis, function specifications, and project plans.  Ability to communicate requirements for key project steps and project status to all levels of the organization. 
  • Extensive experience in participating on or leading multi-disciplinary teams to develop and deploy complex industrial control systems
  • Software programming skills, experience in developing software for real-time industrial control systems, knowledge of operation and configuration of SCADA systems, and expert knowledge of PLC and robotic control systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of current computer science, networks, data base development, security systems. 
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of project management methodology gained from participating on or leading projects or through formal training courses. 
  • Working knowledge of Rockwell Automation Logix PLC's, HMI's and VFD's
  • Ability to work with electrical schematics and Process and Instrumentation Diagram
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple work assignments while executing simultaneously
  • Strong critical, conceptual, and analytical thinking skills
  • Electrically qualified in execution of low voltage work
  • Strong collaboration, decision-making, computer, written and verbal communication skills
  • Adept at functioning within a high performing cross functional project teams 
  • Demonstrated willingness to engage in and or guide technical discussions with all project stakeholders
  • Strong working knowledge of current computer science, networks, data base development, security systems. 
  • Expert level skills in project management methodology
  • Firsthand experience in developing and commissioning industrial control and physical automation systems in plant manufacturing facilities
  • Ability to execute tasks by splitting time in the office and in the field i.e. deploying new automation systems to existing processes and equipment; overseeing process modifications; equipment installations


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications
 
  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical, Process, Computer, or Automation Engineering from an accredited institution 
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in process controls including PLC programming in ladder logic, function block and HMI programming. 
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status.  ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee
 
Preferred Qualifications
 
  • Masters Degree in electrical, or process control engineering 
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience working in application and programming of PLC based controls systems across ISA 95 Level 1 and Level 2 automation levels.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience working in application and programming of PLC based controls systems across ISA 95 Level 1 and Level 2 automation levels
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is highly desirable.  
  • Demonstrated project experience for delivery of digital or physical automation projects to successful conclusions in production manufacturing facilities
  • Demonstrated understanding of current commercially available industrial physical and digital automation equipment, software, and tools. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to develop requirements analysis, function specifications, and project plans.  Ability to communicate requirements for key project steps and project status to all levels of the organization
