Job Description

  • The purpose of this position in the Material Interfaces & Surfaces Engineering Division is to lead the development of differentiated coating, adhesive, and sealant materials and processes to create value in Arconic and its customers.
  • This position brings advanced chemistry, materials, and surface engineering knowledge to support current and future projects aimed at differentiating Arconic’s products in markets such as Aerospace, Automotive, and Building and Construction. Primary responsibility will include leveraging expertise in coating, adhesive, and sealant materials, dispersions, formulations and processing to develop innovative solutions that are value add to Arconic's products.
  • Supervise the work of others (Engineers and Technicians)
Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Lead or support projects aligned with the business needs and technology roadmaps and is accountable for project management from idea creation to implementation
  • Connects projects to value through established financial tools (Degrees of Implementation)
  • Develop and foster collaborative relationships with BU partners and external resources in support of technology development and projects
  • Identifies opportunities and creates new intellectual property
  • Identifies and benchmarks emerging technologies and equipment with potential value to Arconic's processes and products
  • Generates creative ideas and solves issues using scientific concepts, seeks and identifies opportunities and implements innovative solutions with limited direct functional supervision
  • Communicates progress and results through written detailed technical reports and oral presentations to management, peers, and customers
  • Manage and lead day-to-day operations of adhesive bonding lab including maintaining a robust quality system
  • Identify, grow, and develop the talent needed to maintain a core competency in coatings and adhesives.
  • Supervise section’s Engineers and Technicians including resource management, performance management and succession planning
  • Contribute to strategic priorities of the division
  • Serve on Lead Team for the Material Interfaces and Surface Engineering Division
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • Demonstrated expertise in the chemistry of coatings, adhesives, sealants, and resins
  • Experience in the formulation and application of coatings, adhesives and sealants
  • Appreciable knowledge in leveraging coating technologies to enhance surface performance such as durability, wear, environmental / chemical resistance, and appearance
  • Appreciable knowledge in the use and chemistry of adhesives and sealants used to bond metallic and non-metallic components.
  • Appreciable knowledge and proven understanding of material surface characterization, including failure analysis and materials testing, applied to improving surface performance in industrial applications
  • Appreciable knowledge in the characterization of dispersions towards developing new formulations and establishing quality and process control plans
  • Project management experience including project planning and budgeting.
  • Proven ability to connect projects to value
  • Experience in product or process development through implementation
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Excellent technical writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to influence others both above and below job function
  • Ability to network and collaborate across a broad spectrum of internal and external partners and customers

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science or Materials Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in dispersions, coatings, adhesives, or sealant formulation and testing
  • Minimum 1 year experience in mentoring or supervising the work of others
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status.ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science or Materials Engineering
  • 7 or more years of experience in dispersions, coatings, adhesives, or sealant formulation and testing
  • Proven success in new product or process development
