Primary Purpose of the Job:
  • This position is a member of the aerospace product development team at the Arconic Technology Center (ATC).
  • This role will support aluminum product and process improvement projects to deliver cost reduction and growth opportunities for Arconic's aerospace aluminum sheet, plate, and extrusion products.
  • Lead lab-scale studies and plant-scale trials to succesful completion by collaborating effectively with various teams across the ATC and plant locations.
  • Develop metallurgical expertise in 2xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx & 7xxx aluminum alloys targeted for structural applications primarily in aerospace and also automotive markets.
Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Execute projects that support alumium sheet, plate and extrusion development, including new alloys and processes.
  • Design and conduct R&D experiments aimed at improving product performance and/or processes.
  • Analyze experimental results and recommend actions for product/process scale-up.
  • Relate microstructures and processes to physical and mechanical properties.
  • Collaborate on multi-disciplinary teams with personnel across ATC, plant locations, application engineers, and external customers on alloy, product, and process development efforts.
  • Present results and analyses in oral presentations, invention records, and technical reports.
  • Interact with plant locations to ensure successful transfer of technology from lab-scale to production
  • Engage with aerospace customers to establish product performance requirements.
  • Identify and capture intellectual property for product and process innovations.
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • Knowledge of the methodology, tests, and equipment used in the microstructural characterization of metallic materials.
  • Knowledge of physical metallurgy with emphasis on interactions between composition, processing, microstructure, and properties.
  • Ability to design R&D experiments, analyze data and identify important variables and physically significant trends.
  • Ability to network and collaborate across a broad spectrum of internal and external customers and collaborators.
  • Technical writing and presentation skills.



Basic Qualifications:
  • PhD in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science
  • PhD dissertation on metallic alloys
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD dissertation relating to physical and/or mechanical metallurgy of aluminum alloys
  • Applied R&D experience in the physical and/or mechanical metallurgy of aluminum alloys.
