Job Description

Primary Purpose of the Job
  • Reporting to the Manager of the Advanced Control team of the Digital Manufacturing and Automation Technologies division of the Arconic Technology Center, the Process Control Engineer position will conduct technical projects for Arconic's manufacturing operations located at worldwide facilities.  Must be knowledgeable of developing and integrating model-based supervisory control technology, simulation and monitoring tools.  Developing and/or specifying the development of automation systems, and collaborating within teams that could include model development, measurement development, and/or analytics technologists.
Major Activities/Key Challenges
  • Provide technical leadership for development and deployment of innovative process control, monitoring, model, and simulation technology that dramatically increases Arconic’s manufacturing efficiency and global competitiveness.
  • Execute technical projects that support business unit objectives for their manufacturing operations and projects to transfer newly developed technology into Arconic's manufacturing facilities.
  • Identify new process control technology, computer hardware and software for system deployment, and industrial process models that could be transferred to Arconic's manufacturing operations.  Propose programs and projects to capture this technology if it appears to be valuable.
  • Assure that all resultant projects, budgets, and schedules are executed to the complete satisfaction of the business units.
  • Interact with Arconic's plants to understand their technical needs and business objectives.
  • Develop project proposals to develop and implement solutions that address their needs
Essential Knowledge & Skills/Education
  • MS or PhD in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering
  • Ability to clearly communicate both technical and business aspects of R&D projects.
  • Critical Thinking - Ability to analyze problems, conceptualize and define key parameters, and propose and implement effective solutions.
  • Domain knowledge in industrial process control methodology and real-time software development and application.
  • Solid organizational skills, ability to work in team environments or individually, and effective technical writing skills.
  • Familiarity or experience with manufacturing processes. 
  • Preferred experience in flat rolled products processes especially hot and cold rolling, ingot casting, and slab casting.
  • Familiarity with other Arconic manufacturing processes such as extrusion, shape casting, forging, forming, and machining.

  • Global Rolled Products, Transportation & Construction Solutions, and Engineered Products & Solutions business unit production facilities, Arconic Technology Center Pilot Facilities

Qualifications

Basic or Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science.
  • Minimum 1 year academic or work experience in application of model-based control in industrial processes.
  • Minimum 1 year academic or work experience in manufacturing processes in an industrial environment.
  • Minimum 1 year academic or work experience in programming in C/C++, MATLAB.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in development and application of model-based control in industrial processes.
  • 2-3 years’ experience in manufacturing processes in an industrial environment.
  • 3 years programming experience in C/C++, MATLAB, and/or other standard programming languages.
  • 2 years’ experience in an industrial R&D facility.
  • Experience with software development methodology and ability to develop software for real-time process control system environments.
  • Fundamental understanding and ability to develop models, simulations, and controls of manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to clearly communicate both technical and business aspects of R&D projects.
  • Critical Thinking - Ability to analyze problems, define key parameters, and propose and implement effective solutions.
