Arconic has an exciting opportunity for a SMART Reliability Engineer Specialist to work with Arconic’s Global Rolled Products (GRP) Center of Excellence (COE) for SMART Manufacturing to increase the digital and physical automation across GRP.

The SMART Reliability Engineer Specialist provides expert consulting service, advice, and on-site support for Arconic’s Global Rolled Products Center of Excellence (COE) in the areas of process and equipment reliability, maintenance, and engineering. The Global Rolled Products COE group is responsible for process improvement, equipment support, and major capital projects globally. This is a key role in the global technology, engineering and operational excellence organization within the Global Rolled Products (GRP) business group within Arconic. This business group has several domestic and international locations, with various manufacturing facilities. The incumbent will report to the GRP Manager, Smart Manufacturing COE with a matrix to the plant, and will be required to act with a high degree of autonomy in the performance of assignments.

This role requires travel, and the SMART Reliability Engineer Specialist must be able to travel internationally

  • Work with plants to develop and execute Smart Manufacturing Projects to deliver $50M annually (equivalent to 1% revenue to increase %EBITDA by 1 pt) by increasing use of digital and physical automation across GRP.
  • Provide best practices regarding use of digital sensors to move to predictive reliability systems which will dramatically reduce unplanned downtimes.
  • Evaluate the facilities and equipment within Global Rolled Products to determine the level of reliability and stability.
  • Perform gap analysis at the facilities and provide action plans for improvement and achievement in areas of reliability excellence and maintenance efficiency.
  • Optimize process equipment and to improve quality and capacity.
  • Promote among facility management that Reliability Excellence (REX) and process stability are the foundations for improved business performance.
  • Provide on-site assistance to implement the REX tools as necessary
  • Review and validate facility maintenance and sustainability plans to improve equipment uptime
  • Assist facilities with root cause problem solving expertise such as FMEA to solve the most difficult equipment and process problems.
  • Organize support from other resources, including bench mark locations.
  • Use and train others on the use of all facets of the "reliability toolbox", including vibration analysis, machinery balancing, infrared thermography, laser alignment, oil analysis, ultrasonic inspection, etc.
  • Review new equipment proposals to ensure the highest degree of reliability and maintainability will be achieved.
  • Establish and Propagate SMART Manufacturing maintenance and reliability standards across all GRP locations worldwide
  • Maintain a working relationship with suppliers of technology in the reliability and maintenance areas and be knowledgeable of the most recent developments in all aspects of the field
  • Work with all facilities maintenance managers to ensure common metrics and provide short and long-term strategies to improve equipment utilization
  • Perform evaluations of GRP facilities to maintain or increase the level of asset health utilizing SMART Manufacturing concepts.
  • Ability to work with and sometimes lead remote, globally diverse teams and achieve results in the reliability area.
  • Work with the Center of Excellence (CoE) Operational Excellence and technology groups to ensure deployment of standard practices and technologies
Note: The initial location will be Alcoa, TN, just outside of Knoxville, but the incumbent may eventually be relocated to roll out best practices in other GRP locations.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 5 years maintenance and engineering experience within a manufacturing environment
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters or other advanced degree
  • Availability to travel at least 50% of the time
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with rolling mills in the metals industry
  • Experience with aluminum rolling processes and equipment
  • Maintenance Reliability Professional Certification (CMRP)
  • Must be a self-starter with ability to determine priorities based upon specific business needs
  • Ability to work well with a broad group of cultures.
  • Experience in Digital Sensing Technology
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to successfully complete and implement business programs
