Arconic has multiple exciting opportunities for SMART Engineer across the Davenport, IA facility. 

Since it opened in 1948, Arconic's Davenport, Iowa aluminum facility has been at the forefront of American manufacturing. Nestled on the banks of the Mississippi River in Iowa, the plant employs 2,400 people and is a focal point of the global aluminum industry. Through continued modernization, including a $300 million investment over the past decade alone, Davenport has maintained its position as the world’s premier aerospace supply plant and is today the hub of Alcoa’s $3 billion aerospace business.

The Process Control SMART Engineer will lead initiatives improving automation or digital thread within the equipment and process control systems that align with SMART Manufacturing.  This will include new design or modifications of process computing technology hardware and software including PLCs, HMIs, Process Computers, Programmable Drives, SCADA Systems, Smart Instrumentation, system interfaces and associated devices/software.

Smart manufacturing has the goal of optimizing the manufacturing process by employing computer controls, modeling, big data and other automation to improve manufacturing efficiencies.

In this role, successful candidates will be accountable for development and implementation of SMART solutions that improve quality, equipment reliability, and productivity for the business.  This role will include engagement and support in production and maintenance processes, data analytics, technical support, design and engineering, project management, and supervision/oversight of installation/commissioning resources.  Responsibilities will include (but not limited to):
  • Engage in daily operations and understand the manufacturing processes to identify where SMART solutions will benefit the business
  • Research applicable technologies that will digitize operations towards efficiency, reliability, and quality improvements
  • Collaborate with internal customers to define SMART project specifications
  • Lead cross-functional teams to develop and deploy SMART solutions that contribute to the business achieving objective targets
  • Lead and manage aspects of engineering project work, including investigation, specification, design, funding, procurement, installation, commission, tune up, documentation, maintenance/operator training, and startup
  • Develop and implement best practices for operational systems that drive continuous improvement with sustainable gains
  • Limited travel may be necessary for training, design reviews or factory acceptance testing at a supplier’s site, business unit best practice sharing


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science from an accredited institution
  • 5 or more years of experience in engineering, project management, commissioning and technical support of maintenance and operations in a manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and effectively communicate with varying levels in the facility that includes operator and maintenance skilled trades, internal and external department peers, operations management, and contractors.
  • Working knowledge in PLC programming and software programming
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering/Computer Science from an accredited institution
  • 10 years of experience in the engineering, project management, commissioning and support of automation and process control systems in a manufacturing environment
  • 5 years of experience in aluminum rolling processes and equipment
  • 2 years of experience in programming PLC in Rockwell Logix and GE Cimplicity
  • 2 years of experience with programming language skills in C, Unix, Linux, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and PHP
  • Working knowledge of programming and interfacing techniques with various shop floor control systems, e.g. programmable controllers (PLCs) and user interfaces (HMIs)
  • Experience with Best Practices of web development and maintenance
