Job Description

Primary Purpose of the Job
  • The Mechanical Testing Laboratory at the Arconic Technology Center (ATC) is focused on providing the measurement of mechanical properties in support of both Research & Development and Business Unit operations. The group possesses capabilities that allow a broad range of testing and support to the many markets that Arconic supplies. In addition, we continually look to new technology to enhance our capabilities and increase our capacity, including automated robotic systems and systems that allow testing in non-ambient environments. Our team is quality focused, highly cross-trained, and continually looking for new ways to support the business.
  • Provide analysis of material mechanical properties in support of Arconic Research & Development and Business Unit Operations. 
  • Ensuring all testing performed meets internal requirements for validity, as determined by applicable quality system standard operating procedures and external governance.
Major Activities/Key Challenges
  • Maintaining competency with multiple test types (static, fatigue) including associated hardware, software, and quality system procedures.
  • Ensuring testing accuracy during repetitive testing.   
  • Troubleshooting testing procedures/process to determine root cause of inaccurate testing data. 
  • Daily organization of work priorities in a dynamic environment.  Plans and schedules assignments according to priorities.  Identifies scheduling roadblocks and resolves. 
  • Performing test development support
  • Making value added suggestions that help improve testing processes
  • Identifying and supporting implementation of lab improvements
  • Staying current on changes in test standards, test software upgrades
  • Computation of test results and communication of results to requesting engineers/project groups.
  • Maintaining safe and organized work area.
  • Development of technical understanding of the material-property relationships, especially as it relates to understanding of testing design and results.
Essential Knowledge & Skills/Education
  • Strong mathematical and computer skills
  • Science background, including an awareness of general physics, chemistry, and materials science.
  • Attention to detail, and good manual dexterity to install and remove specimens from test fixtures.
  • Strong computing skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Alloy Technology, Defense, Aerospace, Automotive, and Wheels; Davenport Works, Lafayette Works, Tennessee Operations


Qualifications

Basic or Minimum Qualifications
  • Academic High School Diploma or GED
  • 1 year employment as a technician in an industrial or laboratory environment
  • Strong computing skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associates Degree/Bachelors Degree in a technical or engineering discipline. Math curriculum achieved to include, at a minimum, Algebra 2 and Geometry.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills including mastery of data analysis using formulas.
  • Previous experience with mechanical testing methods and operation of electromechanical and servo-hydraulic testing machines would be valuable.
