Job Description

Arconic Fastening Systems is looking for a Senior Metallurgist in our Engineering department.  This role is responsible for applying education and experience in the field of material science to investigate alternatives and to conduct experiments in order to develop and specify materials, processes and finishes for new and improved products and manufacturing tooling.  This position will be based in our Waco, TX plant.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Conducts or coordinates material testing including SEM, microhardness, microscopic, x-ray, x-ray diffraction, and spectroscopic studies of metals and alloys to determine their physical characteristics such as crystal structure, dispersion of alloy particles through basic metal, and the presence of segregation, impurities, fractures, and other defects in metal samples;
  • Develops hot working, cold working, and heat treating and coating processes and specifications to obtain desired characteristics such as formability, toughness, strength, lubricity and corrosion resistance. ductility, malleability, elongation, durability, and hardness;
  • Tests or coordinates tests on parts or materials in tension, shear, impact, bending, or fatigue to study physical characteristics for manufacturing or design purposes, or determine compliance with manufacturing or product specifications, or industry standards;
  • Consults with Engineers and Operations Management to develop methods of manufacturing products at minimum costs and in conformance with customer requirements;
  • Develops, in consultation with material and coating suppliers, new materials and finishes for lower-cost, higher-performing products;
  • Provides Operations with support for selection and thermal processing of carbon, alloy and tool steels stainless steels, and aluminum alloys;
  • Recommends material substitutions and approves/disapproves use of out-of-specification materials with due regard to product quality and functionality;
  • Conducts trouble-shooting and failure analysis studies when products fail to meet performance specifications;
  • Participates in the development of capital appropriation requests by providing required technical analysis supporting financial justifications;
  • Ensure that all work activities are performed in accordance with established safety and environmental standards;
  • Maintains full compliance with Company policies and procedures and conducts all activities in accordance with the Arconic Guide to Business Conduct;
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of and commitment to Alcoa Business Systems manufacturing principles and techniques;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution;
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment;
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution;
  • Experience in an organization engaged in manufacturing of precision industrial products;
  • Experience with continuous furnaces, plating operations, cold and hot forming operations, such as heading and rolling of high production cylindrical and tubular parts;
  • Experience with induction heat treating;
  • Experience working in product design or development.
