Job Description

This role will lead alloy and product and process development as well as process improvement projects to deliver growth opportunities for Arconic's Additive Manufacturing business. This position will involve working collaboratively with researchers and engineers across Arconic, including Arconic Technology Center, ATEP, APP, AFE, AAP , and other businesses within Arconic and Arconic customers to ensure customer requirements are met. This position will grow the use of novel aluminum and non-aluminum alloy powders and additively manufactured products for use in Arconic's primary markets including Aerospace, Automotive, Defense, Consumer Electronics, Industrial, and Energy.

Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Identifying new alloy compositions optimized for additive manufacturing
  • Leading development of creative solutions to alloy and processing problems
  • Designing and conducting experiments aimed at enhancing the level of understanding of the performance of products made by additive manufacturing and by conventional wrought processes
  • Analyzing experimental results and recommending actions aimed at new product development
  • Identifying, planning and executing projects that support new materials options suitable for additive manufacturing technologies
  • Developing testing protocols for additively manufactured parts to establish allowables and lot-release confidence
  • Relating microstructures and processes to physical and mechanical properties.
  • Developing Intellectual Property protection for new alloy products and emerging technologies
  • Collaborating on multi-disciplinary teams with personnel across ATC, at Arconic BU's and with external customers on alloy, product and process development efforts
  • Working with business partners to establish commerical value for new alloy products and applications
  • Networking in the Additive Manufacturing community to stay abreast of new developments
  • Presenting results and analyses in oral presentations, invention records, technical reports and product information brochures
  • Interacting with Arconic Business Units to ensure successful transfer of technology from lab-scale to product processing
  • Engaging with customers to establish performance requirements for commercially significant applications
  • Developing and guiding implementation of Q/A processes and procedures to help ensure consistent product and metallurgical properties of AM builds.
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • Knowledge of the methodology, tests and equipment used in the microstructural and mechanical property characterization of metallic materials
  • Knowledge of “light alloy” (e.g., Al-based, Ti-based alloys) physical metallurgy with emphasis on interactions between alloy design, processing microstructure, and mechanical properties
  • Understanding of the various additive manufacturing methods, including familiarity with atomization, subsequent powder metallurgy processing and additive manufacturing methods and equipment.

  • Ability to design R&D experiments, analyze data and identify important variables and physically significant trends
  • Ability to network and collaborate across a broad spectrum of internal and external customers and collaborators

Basic Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Materials Science, Engineering Science, Engineering Science and Mechanics, or Metallurgical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 2 years research or industrial laboratory experience
