Job Description

The Senior Engineer, Image Analysis will expedite materials development via automated image processing and quantification of features from digital micrographs and compositional/crystallographic analyses.  Compile experimental data and implement relevant details into computer models for prediction of microstructure, properties, and performance.  Assist in development of models to predict microstructure, based upon solidification conditions (traditional vs. additive manufacturing) and thermomechanical processing. 

Major activities/Key challenges:
  • Develop algorithms to extract quantitative data from optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images.  Manage and refine existing Matlab-based image analysis functions.
  • Use computer programs to mine relevant data from energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) maps, and summarize in tables and/or charts. 
  • Identify crystallograhpic texture components based upon x-ray diffraction (XRD) or EBSD scans. 
  • Perform statistical analyses of results, determine accuracy and precision of tests; provide recommendations for future experiments.
  • Assess, interpret, and fit relevant material data, including: microstructure, properties, and performance.
  • Deliver and run models to provide support of commercial activities, including lab and plant trials on composition, processing, etc. in support of new and existing products.
  • Participate in alloy and/or process improvement projects aimed at reducing costs, improving recovery, adding revenue, etc. working with business units and other ATC divisions as appropriate.
  • Present results of projects to peers and plant representatives, thorough use of internal reports and presentations, invention records, patent applications and external publications and presentations.
  • Maintain and grow technical competency in their field of expertise, namely modeling and metallurgy for aluminum alloys and other metals.

Essential Knowledge & Skills/Education:
  • Image Analysis, including batch processing and automatic feature segmentation
  • Use of computer programs to quantify microstructural features and report results
  • Post processing of hyperspectral characterization data, including EDS and EBSD
  • Physical metallurgy, including interpretation of phase diagrams.  Understanding of precipitation reactions
  • Mechanical metallurgy, effect of deformation and thermal treatments on mechanical properties 
  • Ability to design R&D experiments, analyze data, and identify important variables and physically significant trends
  • ​Technical writing and presentation skills, as well as collaboration in multi-member teams


Basic Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree from accredited institution.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience using MatLab.
  • Minimum 1 year experience with statistical analysis.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status.  ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (MS, PhD) in Materials Science/Engineering, Metallurgy, Welding, Mechanical Engineering, Geology, Physics, Chemistry, or Biology.
  • Ph.D. with research focused on alloy development and/or thermomechanical processing 
  • Experience with relevant metals, i.e. aluminum, titanium, and/or nickel-based alloys
  • Understanding of thermomechanical processing of aluminum and/or other alloys, and knowledge of fabricating plant practices and equipment
  • Expertise in materials characterization techniques, using SEM, EDS, and EBSD analyses
  • Knowledge of CALPHAD programs, including thermodynamic and kinetics
  • Experience at an industrial metals company
  • Experience with MTEX toolbox and Dream3D
  • Experience with R programming language
