Job Description

The primary purpose of this role is to lead and execute R&D projects targeting the development of advanced high temperature and ultra-high temperature ceramic materials.  This position brings advanced ceramic powder science, material science and ceramic processing skills to support current and future development of new ceramic materials, powder sizing and part fabrication methods to enable Arconic's Ceramic initiatives to support Defense and Aerospace businesses.
 
Major Activities / Key Challenges:
•    Applies ceramics, material science, powder and chemical processing experience to generate fundamental material and process understanding needed to synthesize new ceramic materials, advance powder processing and develop new ceramic fabrication processes through rigorous experimentation, identification of critical parameters and implementing innovative solutions within defined boundaries.
•    Execution, analysis and interpretation of experimental results necessary to provide recommendation on technical direction of material synthesis, material/mechanical property testing, processing, and fabrication.
•    Accountable for defining project plans and completion of individual projects
•    Identifies and benchmarks ceramic powder processing and ceramic fabrication technologies with potential value to Arconic's ceramic strategic roadmap as well as Arconic’s Engineered Products & Solutions business
•    Communicates progress/results through written detailed technical reports as well as oral presentations to management and peers
•    Develops project proposals aligned with business needs and technology roadmaps
•    Develop sustainable intellectual property for Arconic and ensure timely and robust protection
•    Fosters collaborative relationships with internal and external resources in support of projects.
•    Provides functional guidance to technicians
 
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
•     Ph.D. in Ceramic Engineering or Material Science from an accredited institution with graduate work in ceramics, fine powder science, colloidal science, powder processing
•    Experience in wet and dry powder processing, ceramic fabrication and post processing (sintering)
•     Deep domain knowledge and proven understanding of ceramic materials, preferably non-oxide based high temperature and/or ultrahigh temperature ceramics, fine powder science, inorganic and organic raw materials, powder property characterization, powder and chemical processing, part fabrication methods/processes
•    Strong analytical and data processing skills
•    Familiar with utilizing computational material models to establish process, property, microstructure relationships
•    Experience with statistical process control and design of experiments
•    Experience in project development and management from idea creation to implementation with limited supervision
•    Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership and organization skills as well as the ability to influence others

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
•    Ph.D. in Ceramic Engineering or Material Science from an accredited institution
•    Graduate work in ceramics, ceramic engineering, fine powder science, powder processing and part fabrication methods
•    Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
•    This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status.  ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
•    Ph.D. in Ceramic Engineering or Material Science from an accredited institution 
•    Graduate work, 1-3 years post doc or industrial experience in ceramic material synthesis, powder synthesis, high temperature ceramics, ultrahigh temperature ceramics, powder property characterization, wet and dry powder processing, ceramic powder fabrication processes (e.g. carbothermic), or computational material modeling.
