Job Description

This position provides support and leadership in ingot casting R&D for Arconic. The incumbent will work closely with other Arconic Technology Center and plant casting specialists to provide direction and hands-on support for casting experiments. The incumbent will assist in the development of safe technology and practices involving casting and molten metal processing, and support their implementation in Arconic casting facilities. The incumbent will assist in the direction and leading of casting technicians and technologists in the safe execution, completion, data analysis and documentation of experiments and trials. The incumbent will be responsible for completing assigned projects on time and within budget, and insuring that all contracted deliverables are met or exceeded. The incumbent will solve casting problems at the source and systematically implement solutions to capture value. The incumbent will communicate technical and business objectives and results to other technical and management personnel in the plants and throughout ATC. The total value of this position is $2-20 MM per year in cost savings and increased production. The total budgetary responsibility of this position is $1-3 MM per year.

Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Generate and capture Intellectual Property for Arconic by working with other scientists to develop next generation casting equipment and processes
  • Assist in leading bench-, pilot-, and production scale experiments related to casting and solidification of non-ferrous metals, from development through execution and analysis of results
  • Provide remote and onsite technical support for Arconic ingot plant operations world-wide
  • Assist with maintaining and upgrading casting facilities by identifying problems and opportunities for improving capability, efficiency, reliability, and overall performance and proposing solutions
  • Propose new projects with clear action plans, resource requirements, and potential business value
  • Report to various funding organizations and ATC management
  • Maintain Quality System and other documentation of Casting Technology
  • Perform annual ASAT for Molten Metal safety
  • Support Arconic internal Metallurgical, Process and Safety training
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • Working knowledge of materials/chemical thermodynamics and kinetics of high temperature processes.
  • Working knowledge of solidification and physical metallurgy
  • Working knowledge of fluid flow and heat transfer phenomenon
  • Understanding of metals manufacturing processes
  • General understanding of process control methods
  • General awareness of molten metal manufacturing hazards and a practice of safe behavior

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical, Chemical or Mechanical engineering from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 3 years aluminum alloy DC ingot or billet casting experience
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
