Job Description

Be a key technical Arconic resource as a Resident CAE Engineer at a Key Global Automotive OEM R&D center outside of Columbus, OH.  Role focus will be using LS-Dyna non-linear FEA code to support development of the next generation aluminum closures and structures concepts that will applied to future vehicles launched in North America.  This person will also interact frequently with the Arconic Technical Center in New Kensington, PA and the Detroit Automotive team to derive experimental data to model most accurately the forming and structural behavior of next generation aluminum sheet alloys. 
Major Activities / Key Challenges
  • Learn the methods and standards of the key Automotive OEM to apply correctly FEA pre-processing requirements for aluminum closure and structural design concepts
  • Work with the Arconic R&D team to interpret and preprocess complex mechanical property data to be used for formability and structural non-linear FEA analysis
  • Become a technical expert using non-linear FEA (LS Dyna) analysis for sheet metal forming and structural analysis
  • Post process analysis results and develop engineering reports and present to the OEM R&D team
  • Support other activities when required, such as FEA to empirical correlation studies, carrying out engineering changes using CATIA 


Qualifications

Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Material Science or Engineering, or Physics from an accredited institution
  • 1 year experience using finite element analysis software to solve non-linear contact and/or material property problems
  • 2 years experience with MS Office proficiency (PowerPoint, Excel, Word)
  • 1 year experience with problem-solving, mechanics of materials and Structural Design (statics and dynamics basics)
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Material Science or Engineering, or Physics from an accredited institution
  • 3-plus years related experience
  • Experience using ANSA or HyperMesh
  • Experience using Abaqus or LS-DYNA to perform dynamic simulations with sheet metal design concepts
  • Experience with using CATIA or similar CAD software for sheet metal design
  • Experience with automotive sheet metal closure design (steel and/or aluminum)
  • Experience with automotive body in white design and full vehicle analysis
  • Understanding of sheet metal stamping processes
  • Understanding of full vehicle safety/crash analysis
