Job Description

Primary Purpose of the Job:
  • This is a newly created position to provide leadership and EHS technical support across the Additive Manufacturing efforts at ATC and potentially the BU locations implementing this technology.  This position will utilize technical knowledge and/or experience in combustible particulate safety and industrial hygiene to identify, assess, and control risks associated with metal powders.
 
Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Review implementation success of protocols/procedures created for powder health and safety.
  • Provide frequent field presence to observe practices and answer questions by technicians.
  • Gain learnings for continuous improvement of new procedures/protocols through relationships in the field.
  • Become familiar with the actual processes and practices and provide input on gaps in safety.
  • Drive consistency between powder handling areas here at ATC and throughout Arconic, where it applies, through implementation of common procedures.
  • Identify areas and processes that require unique protocols/procedures based on variables identified that affect risk.
  • Become familiar with relevant codes such as National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), National Electric Code (NEC), International Building Codes (IBC), Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and Aluminum and Titanium Association documents for this knowledge to enable the goals above.
  • Participate in Project Environmental Health and Safety Reviews and Dust Hazard Analysis.
  • Gain an understanding of relevant powder hazard concepts in order to assist with creation and implementation of prioritized risk management plan.
  • Communicate with ancillary groups involved in powder area support such as emergency response team, machine shop, analytical, central maintenance, and central engineering.
  • Help drive integration of Human Performance thinking and tools into all aspects of the business to minimize potential for incidents associated with human error.
  • Provide training for powder safety.
  • Assist in defining experimental projects needed to identify risk variables for continuous improvement of safety protocols/procedure development.
  • Assist in simplification of control concepts in order to communicate and deploy them in a manner that is understood by field personnel with a broad range of education and experience backgrounds.
 
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • Demonstrated Leadership capability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA and Building Code requirements.
  • Strong process / systems safety thinking.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or Safety from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in process safety and/or industrial hygiene in an R&D or industrial environment.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status.  ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, or Related Field.
  • 3 years of experience in combustible powder safety system design and implementation.
  • 3 years of experience working in Additive Manufacturing-related processes.
  • 3 years of experience working in an R&D or start-up environment.
  • Knowledge of Arconic health and safety requirements.
