Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
Work as a team member to take a rough casting and condition it to the specifications that meet the customer’s requirements by performing metal cleaning, finishing, and dimensional inspection and FPI inspection.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
•         Operate hand grinding tools (both belt and stone). 
•         Operate metal cleaning equipment, water flow and sonic equipment. 
•         Adjust parts by use of presses, heat or other dimensional tooling. 
•         Operate hand sandblast and auto blast units.
•         Prolonged gripping standing or sitting and pushing, pulling and lifting.
•         Moderate length of concentration
•         Must be able to work and function in a fast-paced environment.
•         Basic knowledge of computers
•         Must be able to read and interpret Product Criteria (PC) and Activity Instructions (AI).
•         Must be able to function as a member of a team and be able to work under general supervision.
•         Must be able to maintain expected quality levels.
•         Comply with all site required policies and procedures including but not limited to:  EHS, Quality, Code of Conduct and the LaPorte Employee Guidebook.
 


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Job responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 
To become cross trained in order to perform ALL or MOST OF the duties listed below. When necessary, individual may be required to move castings to designated area or perform other work-related duties as assigned:
 
Metal Cleaner
•         Sandblast part by the A.I./P.C.
•         Fill and clean the blasting unit
•         Inspect castings for possible scrap
•         Maintain the correct pressure and speed of the blast cabinets by the AI’s and PC’s
•         Operate glass bead/table clean unit
 
Metal Finisher
•         Finish castings to PC using stones, burrs, belts, templates and gages
•         Sandblast to surface finish
•         Conduct visual operation and primary inspection of casting
•         Input data in computer for collection
•         Use boroscope for inspection and fiber light
•         Perform decap/deburr operation
•         Perform sonic operation
•         Map weld areas
•         Operate comco machine
•         Operate water flow
 
Dimensional
•         Use of calipers, micrometer, height gauges, shim stock, scissors, pin, go no/go, step gages, sonic equipment.
•         Input data for record keeping
•         Adjusting castings for PC compliance
•         Working with engineering on deviant castings and reworking to engineers instructions
•         Datum “C” drilling-Stators Cell Only-(considered add-a-skill op.)
•         Fixture Gauging /Adjusting -(considered add-a-skill op.)
•         Reroute nonconforming castings
*Work overtime as needed.
 
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education:
High School Diploma or GED equivalency required.
 
Skills and Abilities:
Employee must be able to:
•         Read parts to the .0001
•         Understand gauging and templates
•         Have finishing skills, (stones, burrs, belts, etc.)
•         Work independent as well as with a team
•         Able to read and follow written and verbal instruction
 
Experience:
No previous experience required.

  • Occasional bending, reaching, pushing and pulling when retrieving and moving various items

  • Sitting in chairs (swivel, padded, and adjustable) for 70% of the workday
  • Squatting / crouching when retrieving stored items from lower shelves and file cabinets, making equipment / product inspections, etc

  • Visual requirements for this position are close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Clean work areas and maintain a clean work environment; perform 5S cleaning activities as required.

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Duties are performed in a manufacturing setting where compliance with applicable safety rules is required.
 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to work near moving mechanical parts and exposed to fumes or airborne particles, rather confined space, and some degree of extreme heat during summer months. The noise level is moderate.

Metal Cell Operator – Add-a-skills:
1.    Module Leader:
•         This position is responsible to assist the Area Leader in direction of hourly employees working in the assigned area; ensuring a safe work environment, a paced flow of product through the area, and timely processing to specifications.
  • Responds to emergencies. Assists in troubleshooting production problems.  Investigates and analyzes.  Initiates or recommends actions to correct deviations and variables affecting safety, costs, quality, and other factors. 
  • Participates in plant safety inspections and housekeeping audits.
  • Reviews work procedures for safety regulations and concerns
  • Ensure Job task cards are current and legible
  • Confirm quality via routine checks
  • Work closely with area leader should disciplinary action be required.
  • Training and cross-training
  • Prepares and analyzes documentation as required (i.e. production flash reports, log sheets, safety, flow reports, production schedules etc).
  • Develops and follows daily Leader standard work that adds value to the assigned area of responsibility. Recognize when problems exist and take immediate action to lead efforts to resolve 
  • Interacts with their employees and other departments in order to manage the flow of product through the operation.
  • Maintain/verify inventories, as applicable.
  • Requisitions tools and supplies required for operations.
  • Plans, develops, and implements new methods and procedures designed to improve operations, minimize operating costs, and effect greater utilization of labor and materials.
  • Confers with management, engineering, and quality control personnel to resolve problems and recommend measures to improve operations and conditions of machines and equipment.
  • Submit and track Maintenance work orders to support the smooth operation of the department.
  • Respond to (and on) calls from team member (Help Chain)
  • Resolve problems that can be fixed in the moment to preserve production/flow
  • Ensure standard work is followed via audits
  • Facilitate small group activities (like problem-solving)
  • Verify work in front of each station/vault/booth is adequate
  • Verify tooling and utilities for each work station/vault/booth
  • Review previous shift’s results with team members
  • Discuss problems from previous shifts with team members
  • Verify that problems are identified and recorded by the operator on the Daily Management Board
  • Capture results from each Aussie board at the end of the shift and record on the summary sheet
  • Participate on the weekly problem-solving team meeting
  • Communicate problems that needs support groups attention to supervisor
2.    Datum/Sidescreen/Boroscope/Dimensional:
•         Job Summary
o   Work as a team member to perform structural dimensional operations on castings to meet customer specifications.
•         Essential Functions
o   Read and implement work instructions
o   Operate hand tools (air gun, stones, burrs), fixtures, gauges, sonic equipment
o   Adjust parts by use of presses, heat, or other dimensional tooling
o   Vision standards
o   Pushing/pulling/lifting
•         Requirements:
o   Previous experience in stator/structural finishing preferred but not required.
o   Enter required measurements in computer to retain proper documentation.
•         Job Responsibilities:
o   Finish castings to PC using stones, burrs, belts, templates and gages
o   Input data in computer for collection
o   Use boroscope for inspection and fiber light
o   Perform sonic operation
o   Map weld areas
o   Use of calipers, micrometer, height gauges, shim stock, scissors, pin, go no/go, step gages, sonic equipment
 
3.    Weld Blend:
•         Job Summary
o   Work as a team member to blend weld repair castings, dies, molds, fixtures and miscellaneous equipment per weld blend procedures and customer specifications.
•         Essential Functions
o   Read and implement work instructions
o   Operate hand tools (air gun, stones, burrs), degreasers, fixtures, gauges, etc
o   Apply weld identification
o   Vision standards
o   Pushing/pulling/lifting
•         Requirements:
o   Must be able to successfully complete weld blend training program within (3) months unless otherwise instructed by Area Leader. Tests based on successful results in Blend limits and Visual criteria according to the Work Instructions.
o   Must be able to successfully complete prep weld training.
o   Previous experience in routing out casting defects and blending welds preferred.
o   Mechanical ability required.
o   Proficiency in use of gauges and measuring skills required.
•         Job Responsibilities:
o   Blend welds for repair / production weld castings
o   All weld blenders will be required to prep weld as needed.
o   All weld blenders will be required to perform finishing, rework, and metal cleaning as needed associated with a metal cell operator (MCO).
