Job Description

  • Prepare, examine, and document microstructural features, accomplished predominantly via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques (imaging, energy dispersive spectroscopy [EDS], electron backscatter diffraction [EBSD]). Provide written results of all work and present to customers as required.
  • Assist in solving of TSO projects / BU-related failure analyses, including developing the analysis methodology, collating results, and providing written documentation to the customer.
  • Generate relevant quantifiable microstructural data for implementation into materials models
  • Complete SEM characterization experiments in response to work partner submitted requests
  • Update laboratory information management system (LIMS) to track status of work requests
  • Develop techniques to optimize efficiency of microstructural analyses
  • Quantify microstructural data using EDS and EBSD mapping;
  • Deliver automated solutions using advanced functionality of SEM instrumentation
  • Collaborate with materials modelers to import data into models for validation, refinement, or further development
  • Utilize data science and materials informatics to determine impact of parameter changes on microstructure and properties
  • Develop proposals for Materials Characterization capability studies
  • Collaborate with engineers to become engaged with R&D projects with characterization component
  • Working in collaborative teams on BU-related analyses, update plant contacts on status of work, root cause investigations and final solutions incluidng formal documentation.
  • Develop intellectual property for Arconic related to materials and microstructure
Many investigations necessitate ‘custom’ work, where there is no roadmap, and incumbent’s understanding of Arconic processes is critical to finding a solution. E.g. must be able to determine the source of the return as opposed to just describing what is present.  


Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Materials Science from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 2 years EBSD experience
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status.ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Welding Engineering
  • Graduate research in metallurgy
  • Experience in characterizing additive manufacturing or rapidly-solidified microstructures, including aluminum and titanium
  • Proficiency in MatLab programming language for use in image processing, analyzing large datasets
  • Application of statistical programs (e.g. R, JMP, etc.) to regress processing inputs against property results
