Arconic Fastening Systems is looking for a Joining Technology Engineer.  This position will lead the development and application support of joining technologies with a focus on deployment of resistance spot riveting to the automotive market.  This role will work closely with the Arconic Technical Center (ATC/GRP), design engineers, and engineered finishes/forming/joining specialists within AFS.    This position will be based in our Waco, TX plant.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Be the lead engineer for the resistance spot welding (RSR) product line, responsible for product development, testing, maintenance, manufacturability, and documentation to meet both internal and external audit requirements (IATF, ISO 9001, etc.). 
  • Evaluate customer joining requirements, make fastening solution recommendations, and support those recommended solutions by developing weld schedules, specifying/performing mechanical strength, corrosion and other tests as required.
  • Create detailed and well-organized reports to convey test results and application development information to customers and others within the organization.
  • Complete all backup, filing and data management associated with work activities to ensure the creation and maintenance of a reliable database of key, proprietary information.
  • Participate as a key member of cross-functional teams to engage in product design and design for manufacturing activities in support of business strategy implementation.
  • Ensure all work activities are performed in accordance with established safety and environmental standards.
  • Maintain full compliance with company policies and procedures and conduct all work activities in accordance with the Arconic Guide to Business Conduct.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Weld controller programming & weld schedule development for spot welding
  • Hands on mechanical testing cross-tension, tensile shear and peel testing
  • Able to work independently in fast-paced, goal-oriented environment.
  • Organizational skills to complete a variety of tasks and assignments in an effective manner.
  • Problem-solving skills to arrive at reliable conclusions based on analysis of factual information.
  • Good communication skills to convey a range of information clearly and effectively in both verbal and written formats.
  • Able to speak, read and write in standard English, Arconic’s global business language.
  • Skill in the use of CAD software such as Solid Works, Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint is required. 
  • Machine electrical controls design and PLC programming, Allen-Bradley preferred
  • Solid understanding of resistance welding equipment functionality and operation
  • Understanding of destructive and NDE testing of welded or mechanically fastened joints
  • Familiarity with robotic functionality and programming
  • Aluminum and steel weld metallurgy
  • Excellent verbal and written presentation skills
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment both in-house and at customer locations
  • Understanding of metal cold-forming processes such as heading and rolling.
  • Mechanical fastening systems knowledge
  • Experience with Deform, Abacus, COMSOL or other Plastic, Electromagnetic, linear and Non-linear FEA.
  • Experience with servos, BLDC motor controls, discrete and analog sensors and controls


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited Institution required; preferred to be in electrical, mechanical or materials with Electrical Engineering degree being first preference. 
  • Minimum of 5 years’ automotive joining experience
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
