Arconic Fastening Systems (AFS) is seeking an Instrumentation & Controls Engineer for our Aerospace manufacturing plant in Torrance, CA.

This role will be responsible for the management, design, development, repair and maintenance of process control equipment, control systems, equipment calibration, and instrumentation equipment, and all supporting systems with the goal of improving productivity, stability, reliability, safety and business continuity.    
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, manage and maintain control systems (i.e. Distributed Control System, Programmable Logic Controller).  Perform all work and conduct oneself in a manner that promotes safety of the individual and all other at employees;
  • Troubleshoot, make necessary repairs or upgrades, and perform preventative maintenance and service to process control equipment, control systems, equipment calibration, and instrumentation equipment to provide for the reliable operation of this equipment.  Investigate problems, analyze for root causes and derive resolutions;
  • Collaborate with engineers, purchasers and other staff members involved in the production processes including reviewing instrumentation and control related documents to mechanical, electrical and process equipment technical specifications and vendor drawings of equipment and prepare comments and recommendations;
  • Ensure instrumentation and control design and engineering deliverables are delivered per specifications, and within budget and schedule as project leader, if assigned;
  • Participate in installation and startup and commissioning activities to assist personnel in systems checkout and commissioning, including any control system programming modifications, coordinating with the control system suppliers and coordinating resolution to problems within other disciplines;
  • Manage projects within the given restraints including cost and time;
  • Ensure that the instruments and controls comply with all internal and external health and safety regulations and requirements;
  • Develop best practices to improve production capacity, quality, and reliability;
  • Stay current with product specifications, engineering technology and production processes.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations;
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals;
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees and vendors;
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry;
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations;
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form;
  • Project Management;
  • Work with and train technicians on proper wiring connections, basic programming, and basic system protocols.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution;
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience with control systems (i.e. Distributed Control System, Programmable Logic Controller);
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience working with industrial process control equipment;
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position;
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status.  ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee. 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prefer the Bachelor’s Degree is in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, from an accredited institution;
  • Experience designing, managing and maintaining control systems;
  • Experience troubleshooting, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance and service to industrial process control equipment;
  • Experience with equipment calibration and instrumentation;
  • Knowledge of advanced process control (APC), distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), and Panel View HMI screens;
  • Good understanding and knowledge of industry codes and standards (ANSI/ISA-5.1, ANSI/ISA-95, NFPA/NEC, IEEE, NEMA);
  • Instrumentation & Controls experience in a discrete manufacturing environment;
  • Microsoft Office products;
  • PLC programming;
  • Programming Allen Bradley PLC’s, Siemens HMI’s, and programming for remote data translation and gathering is a huge plus.
