Primary Purpose of the Job:
The principal role of this position is to conduct bench top, pilot and plant level experiments in support of research and development projects involving the surface treatment of aluminum alloys. The incumbent will use chemical and process engineering skills to support current and future process/product development efforts aimed at creating, deploying, and improving our product performance and manufacturing processes.
Major Activities/Key Challenges
• Applies science and engineering principles to lab, batch and continuous chemical and mechanical surface finishing processes.
• Supports projects through hands-on execution of lab scale experiments, field trials, pilot operations and plant implementation.
• Operates complex equipment.
• Develops safety, quality, and process documentation including but not limited to standard operating procedures and safe work instructions.
• Communicates progress/results through written detailed technical reports as well as oral presentations to stakeholders, management and peers.
• Identifies and benchmarks technologies and innovative solutions with potential value to Arconic’s processes and products.
• Fosters collaborative relationships with internal and external resources in support of projects.
Essential Knowledge & Skills/Education:
• Fundamental and working knowledge of chemical and mechanical surface finishing processes, equipment, and other technologies applicable to aluminum and other materials.
• Experience in failure analysis and materials testing from bench to implementation applicable to chemical and mechanical processes as related to material surfaces.
• Strong problem-solving skills including root cause and fault tree analyses
• Understanding of quality systems.
• Strong organization skills and standard lab practices (keeping a lab notebook, chemical hygiene, etc).
• Strong communication, leadership, prioritization, and learning skills as well as the ability to influence others.
• Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
Major Customers:
This position will involve engaging with technicians, engineers, scientists and customers across Arconic, including Arconic Technology Center and multiple locations in Arconic’s Global Rolled Products (GRP), Transportation & Construction Products (TCS), and Engineered Products & Solutions (EP&S) Business Units.


Basic or Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science or Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in surface treatments and coatings or adjacent chemical / mechanical processes.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status.  ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • Experience working in a lab environment.
  • Experience with in chemical/industrial hygiene.
  • Project management experience.
