Job Description

Primary Purpose of the Job:
The principal role of this position in the Material Interfaces & Surface Engineering division is to conduct surface and coating related research within Arconic and Arconic’s customers' manufacturing systems to achieve significant improvement in process, productivity, and performance.  
Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Applies science and engineering principles in surface science including surface measurements, treatments, and coatings to support execution of projects.
  • Supports projects through hands-on execution of lab scale experiments, field trials, pilot operations and plant implementation.
  • Solves complex problems and implements solutions with consultation from functional and technical experts
  • Identifies new & emerging technologies in the relevant areas that could provide a significant improvement to Arconic’s capabilities.
  • Accountable for project management and for completion of individual assignments within project portfolios while in consultation with supervisor or project leader.
  • Ability to network within the division and across ATC to execute on projects.
  • Communicates progress/results through reports and oral presentation to management, project leaders, and peers with strong data analysis and quantification of both technical and associated business case.
  • Provide functional guidance to others and train others in area of specialization.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships at all levels with team members, supervisor, peers, customers, suppliers, and plant contacts.
  • Occasionally travels to Arconic production facilities and customer operations in support of projects.
  • Works with senior staff to develop project proposals to meet business or strategic needs.
 
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • Experience in material surface characterization, including materials testing and failure analysis, applied to improving surface performance in industrial applications.
  • Fundamental and working knowledge of methods to quantify surface properties such as topography, gloss, color, light scatter, reflectivity, adhesion, and micro- and nano-hardness
  • Fundamental and working knowledge of one or more of the following inorganic / organic coating technologies: PVD, CVD, thermal spray, electrochemical, and conventional coating technologies
  • Knowledge in technologies to enhance surface performance such as durability, wear, environmental / chemical resistance, and thermal protection.
  • Strong problem-solving skills including root cause and fault tree analyses
  • Understanding of quality systems
  • Strong organization skills and standard lab practices (keeping a lab notebook, chemical hygiene, etc.)
  • Strong communication, leadership, prioritization, and learning skills as well as the ability to influence others
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint and Word.


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • BS in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science and Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in materials or surface analysis
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status.  ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • BS, Material Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Polymer Science
  • 2 years’ experience in surface treatments or coatings
