This opening is in our Kawneer business which is in Harrisonburg, VA. We are the leading manufacturer of architectural aluminum products and systems for the commercial construction industry. Kawneer is part of Arconic’s global Building and Construction Systems (BCS) business unit, which manufactures and markets architectural systems and products in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

The primary responsibility of the Drafter II will use computer-aided drafting software for drafting services by providing die drawings, mentoring and assisting in training less experienced drafters, project coordination and meeting customer deadlines.

Primary Purpose of the Function

Uses computer-aided drafting software and established drafting standards to develop layouts, drawings, and designs that meet engineering specifications
  • Reviews architectural and structural drawings, understands product usage and design for application, and retrieves information to complete drawing, layout or design
  • Uses detail drawings or engineering specifications to dimension, scale or line locate
  • Lead and execute small to medium standard, modified standard and custom projects
  • Check Drafter I, and outsource vendor shop drawings using established drafting standards
  • Train and mentor Drafter I, and outsource vendor employees
  • Coordinate outsource vendor projects
  • Understands project flow from Sales to Estimating to Technical Services
  • Read and interpret as sold quotes

Major Activities/ Key challenges
  • Set up kick-off/Preliminary submittal meetings
  • Prepares/Coordinates shop drawings and/or part drawings for standard, modified standard, and custom projects using established drafting standards
  • Incorporates marked up corrections from internal and external customers
  • Prepares die drawings for projects and customer request
  • Requires knowledge of a variety of standard, modified standard or custom products and procedures
  • Interprets architectural and structural drawings, specifications, design drawings and sketches, and reviews with team (in house or outsourced) to ensure correct interpretations.
  • Well-rounded knowledge of manufacturing, installation, and glazing processes
  • Adheres to policies and procedures
  • Maintains files and records of drawings
  • Maintain current set of Architectural and Structural drawings. Download from FTP sites as needed
  • Understands specification sections for a project to ensure correctness of shop drawings
  • Identify problem areas/non standard areas of project by reviewing architectural and structural drawings and be able to problem solve these areas
  • Communicate requests for information (RFI's) after review of architectural and structural drawings to the project manager or customer, if necessary
  • Provide estimating support for technical services by review of architectural and structural drawings to provide drafting hours
  • Provide architectural service support/details/information to customers/architects
  • Attend/support project meetings with customers and/or architects and general contractors to offer input or instruction for Kawneer representation as needed.
  • Attend/support project mock-ups, field visits, or manufacturing facility to offer guidance to customers/general contractors during the installation process of a product as needed
  • Provides continuous departmental improvements to reduce claims and improve efficiency of shop drawings

Essential Knowledge & Skills/Education
  • Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel, AutoCAD. Desirable knowledge: 3D, thermal modeling, BIM
  • Experience in curtainwall and window is required
  • Knowledge of Kawneer product being used in application of specific project - product information, installation instructions

  • Internal Customers: Project Management, Engineering, Take-Off, Design, Estimating, Production Control, Tooling and Manufacturing Departments
  • External Customers: Sales, Architect, General Contractors, Customer, Service Centers and Consultants


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or GED from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 5 years of drafting experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with AUTOCAD or a related drafting software
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Drafting Certificate or Associate's Degree
  • 1 year of experience with AutoCAD Inventor
  • 5+ years of drafting experience
  • 5+ years of experience in fenestration or the construction industry
