Job Description:
Under the supervision of the Smart Manufacturing COE Manager, the Digital Automation Engineer position is accountable for:
  • Supporting the integration of AWTP’s smart manufacturing strategy elements to include planning, budgeting, and execution of Level 2 & 3 systems across manufacturing processes.
  • Proposing and executing automation projects to reduce operating costs at the Cleveland Works.
  • Providing specialized technical expertise in the application and use of material handling, control, and automation technology for plant facilities and processes.
  • Proposing and executing automation projects to reduce operating costs at the Cleveland Works.
  • Improving the overall safety of the plant’s equipment and processes.
  • Providing engineering innovations that will increase reliability and availability of the plant facilities.
  • Working closely with Production, Planning and other departments (Purchasing, Maintenance, or outside vendors) to plan work activities. 
  • Participating in development of long range process and facilities planning, capital expenditure, and cost savings programs.
  • Driving continuous improvement activities to eliminate all waste, especially as related to maintenance downtime, safety, work practices, and employee involvement.
  • Performing and/or directing the design, development, installation, cost control, and evaluation of complex engineering projects.
  • Providing support in decisions of corporate engineering direction and policy regarding engineering standards, equipment, and processes.
  • Continuing to learn the craft of mechanical, electrical, controls and automation engineering, researching “state-of-the-art” and how it could be utilized on the manufacturing floor.
  • Near mastery of varying software programs, robots, 3D CAD, PLC5 and ControlLogics, device integration experience via serial, TCP/IP, and proprietary protocols, ASP.Net, Java, Java Script, Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services, MS Share, C#, VBA. 
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The principal challenges of this position lie in the development of process controls and procedures in specialized areas as determined by the incumbent, effecting workable solutions to engineering and production problems, and solving those problems rapidly in situations requiring closely coordinated completion with minimum operation interference.
Important duties include:
  • Visualizing, estimating, proposing and implementing advanced automation solutions which improve the safety, reduce costs, and/or increase output of product manufacturing within the Wheels business.
  • Planning, scheduling and coordinating automation installations.
  • Observing operating areas to maintain knowledge of current conditions.
  • Writing and/or approving engineering specifications, designs, estimates, schedules, spare parts lists, quotations, requisitions, work orders, etc.
  • Directing individual designers, electricians, mechanics, and maintenance supervisors.
  • Training less experienced engineers, maintenance supervision, and craft personnel.
  • Preparing RFA’s, engineering reports, and project status reports.
  • Maintaining effective working relationships with peers, associates, and others at all levels.
The position is primarily concerned with providing engineering services.  However, it does influence the character and performance of the organization as it trains and develops engineers, technical specialists, mechanical unit supervisors, and others.  This position does not originate policy but must assure implementation of existing corporate procedures and practices.  Also, it interprets and implements local policy and procedures within the framework of company policy under the direction of the Engineering Manager.  The incumbent plans and establishes goals and objectives for his/her areas, which will directly positively affect the corporate goals. The incumbent is accountable for capital improvements of approximately $1 million annually.


Basic Qualification:
  • BS degree in Engineering or Computer Science from an accredited institution
  • Minimum three (3) years experience in the automation and controls field.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Preferred Qualifications:                                            
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Experience managing projects, including timelines and budgets.
  • Current and up-to-date experience of “state-of-the-art” in mechanical, electrical, control and automation techniques.
  • PLC 5 and Control Logics experience.
  • ABB robot programming experience.
  • OSI PI experience.
  • C# Experience and VBA programming.
