Job Description

Arconic is currently in search of a Casthouse CoE Senior Staff Metallurgical Engineer to join our Global Rolled Products (GRP) Operations business unit in Alcoa, TN.

The Casthouse CoE consists of a staff of professionals which provide Technical, Business, Customer, and Financial support to Arconic’s casthouse network. The staff consists of specialists in various technologies and engineering services related to manufacturing. Process expertise range from melting metal through homogenization. This role will support and interface with the casting facilities of Tennessee (TN) Operations. The casting facilities at TN consist of scrap reclamation, and two ingot casting facilities with specialty casting capabilities.

The Senior Staff Metallurgical Engineering position has responsibilities that include best practice development and deployment, solving problems with global and plant specific focus, and implementing new technologies. This position reports to the one of the two CoE group managers responsible for overseeing the Melting/Recycling and Casting areas of expertise inside the CoE casthouse network. The incumbent will have targeted plants to focus on driving higher levels of productivity and lower costs through deployment of standard practice and ABS tools, in alignment with the COE and TN Operations.

The position requires the individual to be able to work well with a broad group of cultures. The position requires the desire and ability to travel extensively (approximately 25%) with roughly half of the travel will be international.

The Sr. Staff Metallurgical Engineer will also have exposure and accountability to represent Tennessee Operations, under the direction of the Ingot Quality Superintendent. This position will be expected to interface with internal customers in Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management and Sales and Marketing.


Responsibilities:
  • Supporting TN Operations’ Casthouse for metallurgical practice determination, quality systems, product and process improvement, product and process development, customer technical service, product testing, inspection, troubleshooting/problem solving, continuous improvement and inspection.
  • Provide technical knowledge and support to the Ingot flow path and plant wide leadership for metallurgical understanding of critical processes or products identified as core competencies for Tennessee Operations.
  • Become the process expert for the Ingot flow path and may be called upon to support like technologies across Arconic
  • Supports process and product improvement initiatives utilizing the appropriate quality and ABS (Lean Manufacturing) tools within the Ingot flow path
  • Understands how the ABS (Lean Manufacturing) principles apply to his/her area of competency and apply those principles in solving problems and deploying solutions by utilizing problem solving processes and process management systems
  • Support quality system activities within the Ingot flow path.
  • Supports capability and compliance technical audits.
  • Ensures that the Ingot quality systems are performing correctly and reacts to expectations, especially systems and processes impacting product integrity.
  • Supports the maintenance of critical processes and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Fully support Tennessee Operations Environment Health & Safety policies and programs by staying current on required training, being responsible for one’s own safety, helping enforce safe work practices and ensuring that those under their mentorship are properly trained Essential Knowledge & Skills/Education
  • Possess an understanding of critical process and product characteristics
  • Possess an understanding of business objectives and strategy as well as cost structure
  • Incumbent must be articulate, computer literate, and have outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • The incumbent must be a self-starter, with confidence in their own judgment, willing to face new situations and problems.
  • Ability to influence others and proactively network to build relationships across the Ingot flow path

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering, materials science, ceramics or chemical engineering from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in a metallurgical or materials science
  • Minimum of 5 years Casting Experience on DC/EMC Technologies
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree
  • 15 or more years of Metallurgical experience in a manufacturing setting directly related to ingot casting
  • 10 years of Casting Experience on DC/EMC Technologies
