The primary responsibility of the Product Metallurgist located in Niles, OH is to validate conformance of product testing to specification requirements. This will be accomplished by ensuring test plans are correct and disposition results provided in a timely manner, especially when Metallurgical decision-making is required. This incumbent will also collaborate with the Test Lab personnel to ensure that priorities are aligned.
Job Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Be the primary point-of-contact for metallurgical deviation requests to customers;
  • Collaborate with commercial / supply chain planning/operations to ensure that all the relevant information is captured when making the case for deviation acceptance;
  • Understand metallurgical process capability (e.g. mechanical properties / other test properties) through close monitoring of results daily;
  • Carry out statistical testing of the results to quantify the process capability;
  • Address marginal metallurgical behavior and investigate the mechanisms responsible for such behavior while leading improvement projects to resolve marginal behavior;
  • Assist with qualification projects (new product introduction; cost reduction / process improvement), monitor progress of projects through the shop, generate reports and assist with communicating requirements;
  • Work closely with process engineering in the melt and mill / planning / operations groups to disposition product impacted by in-process non-conformances (e.g. furnace deviations);
  • Assist with raw materials qualifications (e.g. new suppliers, process changes at raw materials sources);
  • Carry out material specification review and provide commentary, including exceptions;
  • Support / drive process improvements to achieve better cost position (e.g. yield improvement, scrap reduction, etc.);
  • Provide customer technical support (e.g. customer complaints, product performance questions, etc.). 
Major Activities and Key Challenges Include:
  • The Product Metallurgist must have a solid understanding of Titanium physical metallurgy, thermomechanical processing and product manufacture;
  • Strong scientific aptitude and passion of understanding relationships between thermomechanical processing / microstructure / mechanical properties;
  • Demonstrated track-record of technical problem solving and accomplishments:
  • Ability to provide resolution of marginal behavior (e.g. test failures; marginal process capability improvement etc.);
  • Possess a strong work-ethic while maintaining reliability and integrity while holding yourself individually accountable;
  • Be detail oriented while possessing strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work in a team orientation as well as an individual.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy or Materials Science from an accredited institution or completion of one of these degrees by January 1, 2019;
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position;
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'green card holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science or Materials Engineering from an accredited institution;
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in a Product and / or Process Engineer role focusing on Metallurgy;
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience with New Product Development (NPD) from concept to launch/qualification;
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience of aerospace industry and OEM customer Titanium alloy material specifications highly desirable;
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience with statistical analysis (e.g. MINITAB) highly desirable.
