Job Description

The Furnace Technician is responsible for providing engineering support to achieve KPI target levels of plant availability and performance; i.e. Heat Treatment and Forge Furnaces.  The key responsibilities of this role are to actively support the Planned Preventative Maintenance Schedules (PPM’s), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), System Accuracy Tests (SATS), Temperature Uniformity Surveys (TUS) to Aerospace Material Specification AMS2750E.  Liaising with the Technical and Production Teams to provide scheduled engineering tasks/operations/repairs on furnaces, whilst maximizing uptime of operational equipment.  All these tasks are to be carried out and completed within a specified time frame and to the highest levels of Engineering Health and Safety Standards at all times.

The key responsibilities and duties include:

 Liaising with the Engineering Team to carry out furnace repairs, breakdowns, associated upgrades and subsequent commissioning requirements.

Carry out routine maintenance on all furnaces, instruments, recording equipment and functions in accordance with the Maintenance Management System (MMS).

Compile, review and provide the Site Engineering Manager (for authorisation) with all associated Risk Assessments (RA’s), for engineering activities to ensure a safe system of work is implemented and maintained.

Ensure detailed records of furnace issues, safety and overall furnace reliability is accurately maintained and readily available.

Ensure process compliance and quality requirements.

Set up and carry out surveys, SATS and TUS on all furnaces to AMS2750E standard.

Ensure records of calibrations, thermocouple position and numbers are maintained and readily available.

Carry out repairs of associated instruments (where applicable) and thermocouples and the associated spares management.

Enforce and practice a high standard of health and safety at all times, ensuring that the plan and all ancillary equipment is maintained safely.

Ensure all recording systems for work completion are correctly compiled.

Provide a daily activity report to the Site Engineering Manager.


Key Performance Indicators for the role include:

To achieve furnace availability of >90%

To achieve >95% completion rate of PPM's across all furnace and ancillary systems  

To ensure 100% availability of all furnace critical spares held at the site 



Trained and experienced in the Aerospace Material Specification AMS2750 standard.

Minimum 2 to 3 years’ experience in a Furnace Technician position (or similar).

Experience of working in a manufacturing environment.

Good knowledge and understanding of natural gas combustion systems, including gas safety standards.High level of computer literacy (Word/Excel).  Training will be provided on bespoke software.


Experience of a hot working environment; i.e. rolling, forging, ring rolling, foundry

Knowledge and familiarity of AS9100

Experience of the Nadcap certification standard
