Job Description

To lead and participate in R&D projects in the GRP Technology Directorate with an emphasis on thermal processes, heat transfer, mechanics and deformation. This position could also support other Divisions at ATC including Casting Technology (CT) and Manufacturing Intelligence and Automation Technology (MIAT). The incumbent must also have significant process knowledge in the application of process models for simulation and optimization. The incumbent must also be able to demonstrate deployment of process technology/models into a manufacturing environment to facilitate improvements in productivity, quality, etc..

Major Activities / Key Challenges:

  • Lead projects pertaining to process design and process modeling of thermal processes as applied to Arconic's manufacturing processes
  • Lead R&D projects to improve Arconic's manufacturing processes through development and application of model-based technologies
  • Connect with business units to develop and implement technologies that help improve recovery, throughput and quality
  • Utilize expertise in heat transfer, mechanics and materials to solve problems in Arconic fabrication processes
  • Consult with R&D technical teams to develop and write project proposals for Arconic locations that describe problems and recommend solutions
  • Lead technicians, junior engineers, contractors and other resources during project execution as necessary
  • Solve complex technical problems and implement solutions without direct functional supervision
  • Develop fundamental understanding of the science and engineering principles applicable to thermal processes, thereby actively seeking opportunities for learning and applying technical knowledge
  • Is accountable for establishing plans and driving towards completion of individual assignments within the GRP Technology organization
  • Mentors technicians and junior engineers on the fundamental principles of the thermal processes
  • Communicates progress and results through detailed written reports as well as oral presentations to management and peers
  • Travel to Arconic manufacturing locations as needed
  • Import and apply external technology in thermal science and process mechanics
  • Performs all duties with attention to safety, health and environmental requirements, consistent with Arconic's values and in compliance will all applicable regulations
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • Deep knowledge in heat transfer and thermal sciences, experimental desing, mechanics of materials, Finite Difference or Finite Element modeling and analysis
  • Deep understanding of fluid flow and heat transfer phenomenon as related to manufacturing processes
  • Expertise in heat and mass transfer
  • Strong attention to safe operation and handling of high temperature systems/materials
  • Ability to develop innovative, practical solutions to complex problems without direct supervision
  • Ability to design, build an doperate lab-scale experimental systems
  • Ability to initiate and lead projects from idea/conception through to production-scale implementation and deployment
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to function as a team member and as an individual contributor
  • Working knowledge of Fortran and C programming languages

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in a metals manufacturing / R&D environment
  • Minimum 2 years experience in programming (C, C++, Fortran, Matlab)
  • Minimum 2 years experience in design, build and operation of lab scale experimental systems including one or more of the following: fluid flow, heat transfer phenomenon, thermodynamics and kinetics of high temperature processes
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position


Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • 5 or more years experience in a metals manufacturing / R&D environment
  • Minimum 2 years experience in programming (C, C++, Fortran, Matlab)
  • Minimum 2 years experience in finite element software (i.e. DEFORM, Abaqus, Comsol, Fluent) and CAE software tools
  • Minimum 2 years experience in modeling of metals deformation processes
  • Deep knowledge in heat transfer and thermal sciences, experimental design, mechanics of materials, finite difference or finite element modeling
  • Deep understanding of fluid flow and heat transfer phenomenon as related to manufacturing processes
  • Demonstrated leadership in formulating and executing multi-disciplinary R&D projects related to thermal processes in metals and manufacturing
  • Strong written and verbal communications
