Job Description

This role will lead the initiation, management and execution of aluminum product development and process improvement projects to deliver growth opportunities for Arconic Technology. This is an R&D position which will involve working collaboratively with researchers and engineers across Arconic, including Arconic Technology Center, ATEP, APP, AFE, AAP and other businesses within Arconic’s EPS, TCS and GRP Businesses groups. This position will grow the use of novel aluminum and non-aluminum alloy powders and additively manufactured products for use in Arconic's primary markets including Aerospace, Automotive, Building & Construction, Commercial Transportation, Industrial, Energy and Defense.

Major Activities / Key Challenges:

  • Initiating, planning, implementing and driving to conclusion major multi-year projects by recognizing and utilizing appropriate personnel with ATC, our BUs and externally
  • Providing technical leadership, direction and focus to engineers by acting as a technical mentor and advisor in additive manufacturing alloy development and processing
  • Coordinating the technical efforts of engineers and technicians to maximize the technical success of projects
  • Developing a comprehensive project plan for additive manufacturing of aluminum alloys that translates strategic objectives into well defined activities and deliverables.
  • Tracking progress of projects, ensuring that technical objectives, business ojectives, cost and schedule targets are met.
  • Initiating and leading the development of fundamental knowledge needed to solve complex alloy and processing problems associated with additive manufacturing
  • Responsible for the development of Intellectual Property protection for new alloy products and emerging technologies
  • Collaborating on multi-disciplinary teams with personnel across ATC, in Arconic BU’s and with external customers on alloy, product and process development efforts
  • Monitoring the business and technical aspects of Additive Manufacturing to stay abreast of commercial opportunities and new technologies
  • Engaging with customers to establish performance requirements for commercially significant applications
  • Developing strategic partnerships with powder suppliers to support commercialization of alloy powders
  • Establishing collaborative relationships with appropriate Arconic BUs or AM parts builders to support commercialization of additively manufactured parts
  • Ensures timely, accurate and professional documentation and dissemination of technical progress including early awareness to appropriate leadership of barriers to success.
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • Knowledge of the methodology, tests and equipment used in the microstructural and mechanical property characterization of metallic materials
  • Knowledge of “light alloy” (e.g., Al-based, Ti-based alloys) physical metallurgy with emphasis on interactions between alloy design, processing microstructure, and mechanical properties
  • Understanding of the various additive manufacturing methods, including familiarity with atomization, subsequent powder metallurgy processing and additive manufacturing methods and equipment.
  • Familiarity with AM supply chain and end-use customers
  • Breadth of problem solving skills
  • Ability to network and collaborate across a broad spectrum of internal and external customers and collaborators
  • Excellent project management, technical writing and presentation skills

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in Materials Science or Metallurgical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 7 years of work experience including industrial experience in at least two of the following areas:
    • Development of new aluminum alloy products and processes
    • Additive manufacturing processing and equipment
    • Physical metallurgy of aluminum alloys, particularly of heat treatable alloys
    • Microstructure/process/property relationships of aluminum alloys
    • Mechanical property characterization of aluminum alloys including fatigue and fracture
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • R & D project management
  • Technical writing and presentation skills as evidenced by technical reports and presentations.
