Job Description

Arconic Fastening Systems and Rings (AFSR) is seeking a Director of Machining to plan, direct and execute the machining strategy for the AFSR Jet Engine Rings division. The Director of Machining will provide leadership to assigned resources; ensure conformance with Arconic standards, policies, regulations, and procedures within the scope of authority; maximize customer satisfaction through on-time delivery of products which meet required specifications; continually improve the effectiveness and efficiency of manufacturing processes; and seek to improve profit performance across all product lines. The location can be in Del Rio, Texas; the specific work location is at the AFSR Rings Machining facility in Acuña, Mexico.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Develops and executes machining strategy for AFSR – including but not limited to:
    • Acuña (Mexico) machining strategy including employee training, quality and delivery improvements, capacity growth
    • Oversees and directs outside machining vendor management strategy to improve cost and delivery situation
    • Develops and executes machining strategy for Global machining locations.
  • Develops annual manufacturing plan strategy in consultation with direct supervisors to ensure proper deployment of resources to achieve required levels of production and to meet customer delivery requirements.
  • Coordinates and directs the development and implementation of business plans and forecasts, securing corporate approval of selected goals and objectives, administering and following up to ensure successful accomplishment of the plan.
  • Provides leadership by influencing managers and others involved in the strategic machining process. Ensures open communications and responds to concerns in an appropriate manner.
  • Ensures full compliance with EHS standards, policies, procedures and processes. Confirms that incidents are thoroughly investigated and that root causes are identified and remedied on a systematic basis. Fosters a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.
  • Interfaces directly with customers, in concert with Sales & Marketing Management and Account Managers to resolve problems related to delivery, quality and other issues, strives to address customer concerns in a responsive, professional manner while protecting the interests of the company.
  • Monitors and controls the machining operations of the business, reviewing and analyzing a variety of sales, financial, production and other staff reports, measuring progress, assessing results, and formulating corrective actions.
  • Continually improves the performance of the AFSR Rings machining organization through the application of Continuous Improvement (Arconic Business Systems) principles. This includes the development of a continuous improvement mindset within the organization.
  • Participates with Purchasing personnel to develop partnerships with vendors which produce mutually beneficial arrangements related to purchased item quality, quantity and pricing. Ensures that concerns and issues related to purchased resources are addressed and resolved in a timely manner.
  • Interacts positively and effectively with personnel, both internal and external to the organization. This may include shop floor personnel, management at various levels throughout Arconic, and governmental regulators. Participates in external activities to secure a positive community image of the Company.
  • Analyzes and directs the preparation of Capital Appropriation Requests to secure required capital equipment for projects meeting or exceeding capital return targets.
  • Maintains full compliance with Company policies and procedures and conducts all activities in accordance with the Arconic Guide to Business Conduct.
  • Travel of 25%, with the initial 2-3 years spent in Acuna, Mexico.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience with lean manufacturing, preferably in the machining industry.
  • Proven leadership and management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees, peers, senior-level leaders, customers and vendor representatives.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and persuasion skills. Ability to work independently, prioritizing and completing multiple work assignments in diverse fields with minimal direction.

  • Thorough knowledge of complex electronic business enterprise systems; strong computer skills using Microsoft applications or equivalent.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience machining Jet Engine Rings
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a metal working manufacturing environment, with 5 or more years of that time spent in senior supervisory leadership roles
  • High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Engineering, Businesses or Operations.
  • Experience with CNC programming, machine tooling, and machine fixturing and set up for the machining of jet engine rings
  • Experience with Fanuc Controls, Mazatrol programming, and Siemens Control Systems
  • Experience machining super alloys
